2nd Attempt at Sushi
My first attempt at sushi was fun though not entirely successful (read about it here). Again I used tuna mayo for the filling but this time I used a sandwich bag instead of a h&m carrier bag as a sushi rolling mat. And I used chopped onion instead of leek and this time I put cucumber and carrot in. Still used red pepper puree instead of red caviar. I read on wikipedia what caviar is and how the eggs are extracted from the fish and it grossed me out. I’m not vegetarian or vegan, but I’ve recently learnt some disturbing things about eggs, fish eggs, and in particular, balut. I have only ever eaten chicken eggs and duck eggs but never fish
eggs or balut. I am far too squeamish.
The rice seemed to stick together nicely today. I used basmati – half a cup with 1 cup of water. It was less water in the end because
a lot boiled over while I was changing a nappy, but it ended up being a nice sticky rice which I was able to knead into a
ball before spreading on the sandwich bag sushi rolling mat. I can do this while it is still hot due to wearing cotton gloves with latex gloves over the top. Not the same ones as for the nappy, don’t worry I changed them! I’m a bit of a hygiene freak!
These were fairly successful and I was able to cut them with my recently sharpened knife without them crumbling to bits like last time. And both kids gobbled them up quite quickly so then I had to make some more. So attempt 3 turned out looking like this:
Think I am getting the hang if getting the rice to stick together – I didn’t spread it too thinly this time either so I didn’t get bits of carrot poking through. I kind of like how these last ones ended up being like a loose spiral with a flat bottom instead of a perfect ring – it kind of adds to the effect. Maybe technically it’s just a badly rolled sushi but I don’t care, I want “Progress not Perfection” LOL
